final product

7. Looking back at your preliminary task (the school magazine task), what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product?

6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

I have learnt how to use Photoshop effectively, how to upload documents onto scribd, and then embed them on my blog or other websites.

Before the coursework I did not know how to use Photoshop and now I am confident using it to edit and enhance photos.

i have also learned how to create and upload videos to youtube. we had to film a pitch about our target markets and then take feedback on them.

5. How did you attract/appeal to your audience?

4. Who would be the audience for your media product?

The audience for my media product would be younger people, aged 14-25. This is because I have researched on another magazine, of similar genre, and discovered their target market and the percentage of their reader ages. However my product differs to that of vibe, my product is aimed at a younger audience. I have chosen to do this because I believe there is a growing market in rap magazines for younger people. At this present moment there is not a lot of choice in the market for rap magazines.
I believe that the target audience I have chosen is appropriate because the rap music industry has a laid back attitude and I believe that this represents the younger generation. Adults tend to me more mature and less open to things. Also, the cheap pricing of my product will draw in the audience too because its aimed the younger generation, which some may be students, who have little money to spare, so my magazine offers great value to those who cannot afford to buy a more expensive product.
to help find out which target audience was best suited for my magazine, i used the website http://uktribes.com/ which is a research of all young people in the uk and the different subcultures around. i identified my target market with help from this website.

3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Time Inc. would be a choice of distributor for my product because it is a major producer of magazines, producing over 130 different titles. Such successful products of the same genre were produced by this same company, and that magazine ran for over 15 years and a high circulation. However with the growing influence of the internet it is becoming easier to market products. Many media products are now advertised on the internet for less money and less work. I would have my product advertised on the internet, however I would only advertise on websites frequently visited by my target market because posting an advert about my magazine on a website aimed at older people would be a waste.

2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?

My media product represents a particular social group which is teenagers to young adults. My product does this by having a sharp and catchy title with a stand out font. The simple colour scheme makes the magazine unique and possibly appeals to the younger audience, because younger people are more likely to want to be unique and stand out from the crowd. Also, they want to have the newest things, and magazines are included. This is another way the product can be marketed, through individualism. If a popular person buys it and introduces it to his friends, they will want to purchase it and keep up with the times and trends.
Another way how my magazine represents a particular social group is the genre; it is not aimed at the rising ‘indie’ or rock fans. It is aimed at general rap fans, which also enjoy a mix of the genre, from the original artists to new and upcoming artists. The first edition is with an up and coming artist kidT. This could be a gamble because people won’t recognise him but this could have a positive effect, with the magazine becoming more individual which will eventually lead to accidental marketing.
Also, the laid back and simple style of the magazine represents the audience target as well, this is because the music’s style is more of a chill out rather than rock or indie which have emotion and feelings respectively. Rap and hip hop music is more laid back and slower than indie or rock. This is reflected in the audience in the way they are and the way they dress. For example their personalities are more likely to be laid back and their clothes are based on what the artists’ wear; which are mostly baggy clothes which also reflect laid back and almost a care-free approach.
Also, my artist reflects another rapper of similar style and approach, such as professor green. He compares to my artist, Kid T.

The two are doing similar poses and there dress sense is similar, with both wearing similar black clothing and both look confident.also they are both in a similar pose both looking down away from the camera.

1. in what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? (I.e. of music magazines)

My magazine uses similar forms and conventions of real products such as VIBE magazine, because it is a similar style. Also, it is the same genre. With these factors it is inevitable that there will be some similarities. However, my product is aimed at a younger audience so it is simpler and less complicated than VIBE for example.
My magazine uses a real magazine set-up with the front cover being in the F shape, meaning that the audience reads across the page, with the main attraction being the centre piece; the photograph on the front. This technique is used on real life magazines and also on magazines I have looked at for my research.

This is an F layout magazine, with the main attraction being the model in the centre if the picture. The main text across the left hand side make the F complete. Although there is text on the right hand side, it is smaller than on the left so I believe that it is an F layout. I chose this for my magazine because I believe it looks better and also will give my magazine a unique look.

Other examples of magazine layouts are the z shape, which I did not choose to do, however they are popular with some magazines. This is a layout where your eyes are drawn across the page from left to right and then down to the right again. This is commonly used, however my magazine does not use this because I do not want it to ‘fit in’ with others, and I want it to stand out.

This is my magazine, which I have used the ‘F’ model, and used a midshot, which most magazines use.

Mock-up Front cover

Test Shots

this shot is a mid shot, and it looks authoritive. the brick wall provides a almost intimidating look and the pose looks smug.

This shot is one of my favourits because it suits the style of my magazine and the pose is a commanding one, demanding the respect. if this was the front cover of my magazine i think it would appeal.

This is an unusual shot for my magazine, however with a large male audience a female on the front cover may draw attention.

This is a mid shot, but abit zoomed out, however the background is filled with bricks, which provide a coulorful and deep backdrop.

this is a long shot, which could be used on my double page spread, because a mid shot is needed for my front cover. also, this type of photo is common on double page spreads.

this photo is also a long shot, however i like it because of the lighting effect. a shadow of the tree gives an effect which i like.

in this mid shot, i asked the models to do these poses because it is cheeky, which i think my magazine audience would like. Similar covers have been used on vibe magazine, which was my research magazine. also vibe magazine has been very succesful so therefore there style must be popular.

this photo is mostly blocked out by light but it is a mid shot and i took it myself theredore it is on here. i was just playing around with diffrent light effects and backgrounds.

audience profile

Jack is a 17 year old student currently living in leicester. he studies his A levels at college, he works on saterday mornings at his freinds dads shop which sells sports equipment. Jack is a sporting person and he plays football for his local team every sunday, and trains on tuesday nights. his stlye is very much his own, with mixing and matching diffrent styles. on friday and saterday nights he usually goes out to parties or socialises with his freinds. Jack listens to mostly rap and Rnb which he has done since he started lisening to music. He is an easy going, funny character and is thoughtwell of by almost everyone he knows. Jack reads music magazines but his favourite is VIBE. he buys vibe because he likes its style and its features. because he like rnb and rap, vibe covers all these areas. i think Jack would like my magazine because it will cover his favourite type of  music.
another target audience could be :
jamal is a 19 year old mixed race student living in london. he works part time at his local music shop, which he has been going to since he was around 10. Jamal is currently working on his debut rap album, at his local recording studio. he left school at 16 to pursue his dream of becoming a rap artist. jamal's style is mixed, depending on what hes doing. when he is socialising with freinds his style is urban. tracksuit bottoms with air max trainers and a casual top, but branded. for more important occasions, jamal's stlye is slightly indie with chinos and converse trainers or vans. he wears a smart casual shirt. he reads various music magazines, including VIBE which is his favourite, and he has been reading that since he was 12. i think jamal would like my magazine because it is going to be bright, appealing and have the similar features of vibe.

target audience

Vibe is a music and entertainment magazine founded by producer Quincy Jones. The publication predominantly features R&B and hip-hop music artists, actors and other entertainers. The magazine's target demographic is predominantly young, urban followers of hip-hop culture.

Vibe magazine has a total audience of 2.4 million, with an almost 50:50 split of gender readers. 55% of the total audience are men, with 45% women. The age range of the magazine vaires form18 to 35 plus. 67% of readers are aged 18-34. also, 29% are 35 plus. this indicates that a wide range of people read the magazine and therefore my target market will be large. also, the median age of all readers was 30. this is a suprising fact,as i thougth it was mostly young people who read it.

another fact about vibe, which is not so suprising is that 55% of all readers are in college education. hence why the magazine is usually bright, appealing and relativly cheap. also, 62% of readers are employed, so the magazine can afford to be a little dearer than usual, because over half of the readers are employed, meaning they will have more money to spend on magazines.

The ethnic background of readers is dominated by black african americans, with 75% of all readers being this ethnicity. the rest is made up of white(15.9%), spanish/hispanic/latino(12.4%) and asian(1%). other races account for 11.3% of the magazines readers. the major audience then is black african americans. this does not suprise me as the majority of rap/hiphop/RnB artists are black or african american.

Vibe magazine mood board

i picked this because i find it funny.

i picked this because it reminds me of godzilla

i picked this because heston is a good chef and this could be easily modelled

i picked this because it has david beckham on and he is a great man. also the pose he is doing is good and this could be modelled by my model. the photo takes up the majority of the screen to resemble his importance.

i picked this because i like the art of it and it is also a prediction of a future metropolis were money is worshipped, hence the statue of a bull, a bull market is an agressive stock market where alot of short term  money is made.

i picked this because it is appealing to me, the green writing stands out and the picture looks good.

i poicked this because i like it, although i could not get a model to do it.
i picked this because it is simple and can be easily modeled. i like the simpleness about it and the colour scheme is basic but effective.

i chose this cover because it is appealing to me, as is it is to anyone who knows anything about football. also, the colour and style is appealing.

Prelim Evaulation

My prelim represents students that seem to be
easy going, well dressed with a sense of style. all in the chaos of the run up to january exam. the prelim is that the model is still acting cool whilst everyone else seems to be fretting about the exams.

Who would be the intended audience for your product?      The intended audience for this magazine would be the students. This is because of the information provided b y the magazine, school going-ons, principals message. All these aspects of the magazine apeal to the student audience, but it could be read by the parents as ecourregement to get their children to get involved with their schools business more.

How did you attract/ address your audience?
with a sharp, smart photo on the cover, and using a repititive colour scheme. the colour scheme matches because of the logo and standard black text. the photo draws the target market's eye and then the text on the front draws them in.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
I have learnt that there is easier ways to cut out an object from a background that just using the magnetic lasso tool to go all the way around, you can use the magic wand tool to delete big chunks of it. I have also learnt thart you cna import pictures to be a background of a page.
